The Mac Lab

Back in the Mac Lab Again

by skocko on Mar.18, 2009, under Educators, Students

maclabt_smI can’t remember the last time I was too ill to open shop while the stars were shining so the Mac Lab Early Birds™ could get their graphic fix on. (The first one, Sarah S, showed up at 5:35 this morn.) Even when I’m scheduled to attend a workshop or am otherwise obligated to be elsewhere, I’m always here bright and early unless said obligation is out of town. Though I’m not firing on all cylinders yet, it feels right to be back in the saddle again.

Thanks to Evee A for the proof of concept that you can make cool art with Skocko’s fonts. While typographic art isn’t for everyone, logo, t-shirt, poster, and deck design should call out to the inner artist in many of you, including 3D’ers! And speaking of 3D artists, unless you’re into photography or Flash, the rest of this post is optional reading. Digital artists, read on…

I was lucky enough to attend a Jay Maisel presentation at Photoshop World a couple of years ago. Today, he’s Scott Kelby’s Guest Blogger. A great read with great advice. (No, his suggestion to stand still does not contradict this post.) Lots of familiar themes that our dedicated readers will recognize. Always nice to encounter synchronous, conceptual pingbacks.

Abduzeedo has a terrific (as usual) article: How to Create a Radical Photo Sequence. NOTE: a tripod makes this 99% easier. This really is a simple way to WOW people. And this technique can be pushed way further into the WOW zone if you use a little imagination (hint, hint).

Justin over at the CartoonSmart Blog has two recent posts that you might find of particular value. The first deals with pop-up windows in Flash. We use 7Web Behaviors (Thanks, Alex!) for this in class but when you’re home and don’t have the extension, Justin has shared one of the most sought after chunks of code we Flashers seek. It’s a two-part process so pay attention. Work with the AS2 version. He also points to a site that Hannah J showed me last year. If you’re one who draws the human figure, Pose Maniacs is a wonderful resource.

Hey Skocko! I got my fonts up plus I am working on extra fonts although they are not fully done. It sure takes a lot of work to make these little fonts. I feel like my fonts are so poor when I looked at the fonts in the gallery. But still, it is really fun to play with these blocks and shapes.

Here is a link to my Fontstruct page –> http://fontstruct.fontshop.com/fontstructors/fgdesigns

Skocko… this is off topic, but those cookies were SO GOOD!

Fadi, way to go. It does become a wax on wax off exercise at times. A fun way to free the right brain. Keep at it!

Hannah, Girl Scout Cookies always satisfy. :D

Where can I find the tutorial that tells you how to do this?

It might be on PSD Tuts. I’m not sure. You might walk across the room and ask Evee. He sits at computer 41.

It’s pretty straight forward though. You should be able to figure it out within a few tries.

    Good job, Fadi.

Check out the CreativeVolition as it’s typeset. Tight kerning + light/bold font + color change = Told you that’s how the pros do it.
