project: the Brush Tool

description: In this tutorial you will learn your way around the brush tool and its many options.

Files: None.

step 1: The Brush Tool (Figure A) uses only a Fill Color. (Figure B)

  A    B

step 2: The first option is Brush Mode and the black triangle at the lower right indicates hidden options. (Figure C) Click on the icon and the options are revealed. We'll begin with Paint Normal. (Figure D)

  C    D    E

•Note: Use Pressure (Figure E) only works with pressure-sensitive tablets.

step 3: The next option is Brush size. (Figure F) Click and size options are revealed. (Figure G) Select any size.

  F    G

step 4: The next option is Brush Shape. (Figure H) Click and shape options are revealed. (Figure I) Select any shape.

  H    I

step 5: Draw an object on the stage (with a fill and stroke), switch back to the Brush Tool, and paint across it. (Figure J) When the mouse is released the stroke is antialiased. (Figure J) As you see, the Paint Normal option does just that.

  J    K

step 6: Select Paint Fills. (Figure L)

  L

step 7: Paint across the object (Figure M) and notice the results. (Figure M) Paint Fills seems to paint everything except strokes.

  M    N

step 8: Select Paint Behind. (Figure O)

  O

step 9: Paint across your object. (Figure P) Paint Behind seems to live up to its name. (Figure P)

  P    Q

step 10: Select Paint Selection. (Figure R)

  R

step 11: Paint across your object. (Figure S) Nothing happens. (Figure S) Can you guess what we forgot to do?

  S    T

step 12: Grab the Arrow Tool and make a selection. (Figures U, V)

  U    V

step 13: Paint across your object (Figure W) and, depending on your selection, something weird may happen. (Figure W) Paint Selection seems to paint selected fills only (with the occasional odd glitch on or around the stroke).

  W    X

step 14: Select Paint Inside. (Figure Y)

  Y

step 15: Paint across your object (Figure Z) and if you started painting outside of your object the paint stays outside. (Figure Z)

  Z    Z2

step 16: Begin painting inside your object (Figure Z3) and the Paint Inside option works as we'd expect it to. (Figure Z4)

  Z3    Z4

step 17: Experiment with the Brush Tool options (and don't forget they're there!) And as we've been fooling around with brushes and paint, how 'bout we check out the Color Mixer next?
