  step 1: Clicking on the visibility button (the small dot) hides the layer. Clicking on the lock icon protects the contents of that layer. As you see, once locked, it is impossible to select the green square. (Figure A)

step 2: Naming, adding, rearranging, hiding and locking layers will quickly become second nature. The weak link seems to be naming. Don't grow lazy! Once you start to build complex animations you will depend on naming conventions more and more so begin to rename your layers each time you start a new animation.
