  step 1: Select the Text Tool. (Figure A)

  step 2: Make sure the Properties panel is set to Static Text. (Figure B)

  step 3: Click in the double arrows to choose a font. (Figure C)

  step 4: Select a font size by typing in a number or clicking on the arrow. (Figure D)

  step 5: Select a font color. (Figure E)

  step 6: Try to resist drawing text boxes with the Text Tool (we'll get to them soon enough). If you can't resist, draw it then hit the Escape key to start over. Just click and type a few letters. (Figure F)

  step 7: To adjust the Character Spacing of the entire word (tracking), select it, then enter a number or drag the slider as shown. (Figure G)

  step 8: To adjust spacing between individual letters (kerning), select them and enter number or drag slider. (Figure H)

  step 9: Click on the Arrow Tool (or press Escape to leave Text mode and V for the Arrow Tool) and select text if necessary. Window > Align (Command-K) and click as show to align text to stage. (Figure I)

  step 10: If you happen to click away from your text the Property Panel changes to reflect the choice. Click back on your text and even without the Text Tool you can edit the font, color, etc. Command-Z as many times as it takes to undo the test edits. (Figure J)

  step 11: If you undo too far, the shortcut for Edit > Redo is Command-Y. Now you're ready to begin the Text Animation process.
