Changing File Names

In this lesson you will learn how to change file names (without damaging your files and links).

  1. As you may recall, we have a misnamed file to deal with

  2. Click once on the name (not the icon)

  3. Pause then click again (a double-click will launch your file)

You are now free to position your cursor to correct the mistake

Notice how the arrow changes to the I-beam to indicate you are now working in text mode

  4. Click, pause, click, position, click, press Delete, add the underscore, and hit Return (as in the following movie)

    CLICK ARROW TO PLAY MOVIE

Note: After you change the file name Dreamweaver may ask you if you want it to update the links

You can say, "Thank you" if you want before you tell Dreamweaver, "Yes, please update my links!"

That's one of the main functions of this program!

Important: You may feel tempted to skip the Site Window and change file names from your Root Folder instead. Yes, it's easier that way, but if you tempt FATE (F8) by doing so, I can absolutely guarantee that you will eventually find broken links and broken image files littering your Website.

Dreamweaver keeps track of all your files via the Site Window. When you create files, create folders, change names, or move files into new folders (all of which you will do), your links and images will be preserved if you use Dreamweaver's site management tools properly.

Congratulations! You now understand how to change file names properly.
