Defining a Site

Note: The following is aimed at a specific project but the instructions can pertain to defining (or editing) any site in Dreamweaver.

Launch Dreamweaver

If the Site Window is not open press the F8 key

Click on the Site: pull-down menu and select Edit Sites...

In the Edit Sites dialog box click New...

The Site Definition dialog box opens

Note: If the Basic tab is selected, click on Advanced

For Site Name: enter 06_button_test and click on the Local Root Folder icon as shown

You need to navigate to your folder in the hard drive

Double-click on your folder (or choose Open after selecting it)

Click on New Folder

The New Folder dialog box opens

Name your folder button_test and hit Return or click Create

Choose the button_test folder you just created

Click on the Default Images Folder icon

In the following dialog box navigate back to your button_test folder and open it

Click on New Folder

Name it images and hit Return or click Create

Choose the images folder

Click on Design Notes in the Site Definition dialog box and verify that both boxes are checked

Click on Local Info and verify your settings match these

Hit Return or click OK

The Edit Sites dialog box now lists your new site

Hit Return or click OK

Your Site Window will look like this

In the Finder -- NOT in Dreamweaver -- drag the nav_buttons folder into the images folder inside your 06_button_test folder. If you do not have a nav_buttons folder, follow the directions on this page.

When finished you will see the following files (if you click the appropriate twirlies)

Can you spot the errors we must correct?

We NEVER use capital letters, right?

In the Site Window -- NOT in the Finder -- click on the name to highlight it, wait, then click again to edit the name

Click just after the capital C

Replace the offending capital letter with its lower case version

When you hit Return (or try to do anything else) the Update Files dialog box appears

Choices, choices...

Dreamweaver is asking you if you want it to keep your links from being broken

I suggest you ALWAYS let the program update your files unless you have a good reason to break the links (if you find a good reason, please let me know what it is)

Change the other names like so

And now you're ready to get on with the button tutorial
